“There’s nothing noble in being superior to your fellow men. True nobility is being superior to your former self – Hemingway”
I think Hemingway got this one right. So much of our focus in business is on being better than the so called competition, when if we simply focused on being better at who we are, hat we did yesterday, and what our customers really want, we wouldn’t have time to think about the competition.
One of the problems I’ve encountered when it comes to trying to be better than the competition is that it seems more based on fear than a desire to be the best you can be. It’s more based on not wanting to lose than on wanting to win. There is simply a different and better energy behind getting up in the morning to see how you can be better today than you were yesterday, instead of getting up for fear that someone else may beat you.
I prefer to get up focused on how I can be better, because it’s the one and only thing over which I have control. Try being in competition with yourself to be better today than you were yesterday and maybe there won’t be any competition to fear.
